It’s a big weekend in College Football starting Thursday night with the Missouri Tigers and Nebraska Cornhuskers hooking up on ESPN. The headline of the weekend, though, will take place at Death Valley in Baton Rouge as the top-ranked Gators faceoff against the 4th ranked LSU Tigers. Let’s get to the picks.
Nebraska at Missouri (Thursday night): The Tigers begin a murderous three game stretch with Texas, Oklahoma State and the Cornhuskers. The winner takes a temporary lead in the Big XII North with undefeated Kansas waiting in the wings. Missouri QB Blane Gabbert’s interception streak comes to an end, but not before dealing Bo Pelini’s squad their first conference loss. Missouri 31, Nebraska 30.
Florida at LSU: Will he or won’t he? That’s the question regarding Tim Tebow. The entire College Football world is awaiting to see if the Heisman frontrunner and Florida QB will lead the Gators Saturday night. Besides, based on the highlights and passion for the game, it’s hard to believe Tim won’t answer the call. In the game of the season to date, Florida 28, LSU 24.
Georgia Tech at Florida State: In a related story, the Seminoles have a game this weekend. Everything has been overshadowed this week by the controversy regarding Bobby Bowden and head coach in waiting, Jimbo Fisher. If you thought it was bad in Tallahassee this week, just wait until after this game. Georgia Tech 31, Florida State 20.
Michigan at Iowa: Kirk Ferentz’s Hawkeyes team has been a classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story. Week 1: Defeat Northern Iowa 17-16. Week 4: Go on the road and upset the nation’s #5 team (Penn State) 21-10. Week 5: Hang on to win against Arkansas State 24-21. What will happen in week 6 is anyone’s guess. If Iowa wins, they’ll tie their best start in 25 years. Here’s to next year. Michigan 24, Iowa 21.
Oregon at UCLA: If anyone is going to contend with the Trojans for Pac-10 supremacy, it will be the Ducks, although a quarterback controversy could be on the horizon. Jeremiah Masoli was injured in last week’s game against Washington State and backup Nate Costa – a fan favorite – is scheduled to start this weekend against UCLA. The Bruins are still bent on proving there is more than one team in Los Angeles, but they don’t have the firepower to do it this weekend. Oregon 38, UCLA 20.
Georgia at Tennessee: Neither of these teams are having the type of season they envisioned. The Vols need to win to keep their bowl hopes alive, while the Bulldogs need to show they are still on the same level as Florida, LSU and Alabama. If UGA can prevent dwelling on last week’s controversial unsportsmanlike conduct pentalty, Mark Richt, Joe Cox and company will earn a much needed victory. Georgia 24, Tennessee 17.
Oklahoma State at Texas A&M: The NCAA doesn’t like being lied to and Dez Bryant is going to suffer their wrath starting with the game against the Aggies. The star WR was suspended for improper dealing with an agent, but is flying to Indianapolis next week to plead his case. Even with the controversy, the Cowboys have a better offense, better personnel and a better team. Come Saturday night, they’ll have the better result. Oklahoma State 20, Texas A&M 13.
Wisconsin at Ohio State: The Badgers have been one of the biggest early season surprises, not only in the Big 10, but also in the country. Bret Bielema’s squad boasts the nation’s 10th ranked rushing attack, while the Buckeyes are in the Top 15 in rushing defense. Ohio State gets back on track for the Rose Bowl and BCS National Championship with a Saturday afternoon victory. Ohio State 27, Wisconsin 16.
